Infectious diseases are a major cause of illness among school going children. It is very important that any pupils who are unwell should not attend the school. At times, exclusion periods are necessary when there is a risk of infection to staff and other children. Children should only return once they are recovered. Please see the “Management of Infectious Diseases in Schools”document for the appropriate exclusion period for the different ailments. It is vitally important that parents are aware of the appropriate exclusion period to stop the spread of infections to staff and other children.
An example of some common infections and the appropriate exclusion period are;
Chicken Pox - Exclusion: Those with chickenpox should be excluded from school until scabs are dry; this is usually 5-7 days after the appearance of the rash.
Norovirus (Winter Vomitting Bug) - Exclusion: Pupils who have been vomiting or have had diarrhoea should be excluded until 48 hours after resolution of their symptoms.
Influenza - Exclusion: Pupils with influenza should remain at home for 5 days from when their symptoms began. In general persons with flu are infectious for 3-5 days after symptoms begin but this may be up to a week or more in children. Pupils should not re-attend school until they are feeling better and their temperature has returned to normal.
It is essential that your child submits an absence explanation note following an absence from school. All families have been provided with a booklet of these. If you need a replacement booklet please let us know. Children with absences of 20 days or greater are required, by law, to be reported to Túsla – the Child and Family Agency.
