Active School Flag
The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community.
The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often.
The pupils, staff and parents of Glounaguillagh National School are committed to making activity and exercise a fun and everyday way of life in our school.
In order to achieve an Active Flag we must fulfil criteria in four sections: Physical Education, Physical Activity, Partnerships and Active School Week.
We have chosen our Active School Committee who will help us to achieve our Active Flag.
They will lead the different initiatives that we will take part in as well as come up with some new, fun and exciting ways for us to stay active in our school.
Our thanks to the committee members; Ayda O’Connor, Ellie O’Grady, Donnacha O’Malley, Zoë Russell, Ruby Doyle, Dara O’Brien, Jack Moloney, Caoimhe O’Connor, Caoimhe Foley, Eimee Lynch, Sophie Moriarty, Síomha Clifford and Stephen O’Reilly for your great work.

Active Schools Week
Our Active School Committee took the lead in planning and delivering a fantastic Active School Week, which took place from May 6th to May 9th. The committee met in advance to brainstorm creative and inclusive activity ideas to ensure everyone in the school could get involved and have fun.
Each morning, the committee gathered Junior and Senior Infants and brought them to the Halla for some lively ‘Wake Up Shake Up’ dance sessions. These energetic morning routines were a big hit — the younger pupils looked forward to starting each day with music, movement, and smiles.
Throughout the week, a wide range of lunchtime yard games were organised, including: Rounders, Hockey matches, A Skipathon, An exciting Obstacle Course
A highlight of the week was the official opening of our Active School Walkway, with every class participating in a variety of cross-curricular activities designed by their teachers. This gave pupils a chance to enjoy movement while learning in the great outdoors.
On Wednesday, we held a Whole School Walk, with older and younger pupils paired together. Our Active Leaders led the way and offered support and encouragement throughout the walk, fostering a great sense of teamwork and community.
On Thursday and Friday, we hosted football matches with mixed teams from 3rd to 6th class, followed by relays, rounders, and a spirited tug of war competition — including a crowd-favourite match between the 6th class boys and the staff!
We wrapped up the week with a vibrant Yard Disco, bringing everyone together one last time to dance and celebrate a brilliant week of movement and fun.
A huge well done to our Active School Committee, who worked incredibly hard to organise, set up, and run each activity. Their leadership, teamwork, and enthusiasm made the week a fantastic success — and one that pupils will remember for a long time!

Skip Around Europe
From March 31st to May 9th, We participated in the Skip Around Europe initiative as part of our ongoing commitment to the Active School Flag programme. This exciting challenge encouraged pupils to get moving each day while also exploring European Geography in a fun and interactive way.
The Active School Flag team kindly provided us with 30 skipping ropes and a skipping rope rack, which was placed at the school entrance and made available to all classes. Many children learned how to skip for the very first time — an achievement we were thrilled to see!
Each day, for four weeks, every class took part in skipping sessions and recorded their daily skip tallies, which were proudly displayed outside their classrooms. The sense of teamwork, progress, and enthusiasm was clear to see across the whole school community.
The initiative not only boosted physical activity, but also created a wonderful sense of excitement and motivation. Best of all, it's been fantastic to see so many pupils continue skipping during break times, developing both their fitness and their love of being active.

Cycle Right Programme
Pupils from 5th and 6th Class took part in the Cycle Right Programme, completing four sessions of practical cycle safety and skills training.
This programme has been such a valuable experience for the children. While they might have been tired upon their return from Killorglin on the last morning, the children thoroughly enjoyed putting their practice over the last number of weeks to the test.
Our thanks to Pat Clifford and Conor Gleeson for delivering a brilliant programme. Thanks to Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership for contributing towards the cost of the sessions as well as the other agencies involved. A final thank you to the parents for supporting this very worthwhile initiative.
This initiative helps promote safe, competent, and confident cyclists.

Bhí lá iontach againn ag céiliúradh Seachtain na Gaeilge agus Lá Fhéile Pádraig. Bhí a lán rince, ceol agus spraoí againn. We started the celebrations with a concert packed full of music and dance before moving outside for a whole school céilí mór sa chlos. Rinne gach duine iarracht maith and bhí an spórt ag na páistí. Mid-Kerry Mini 7s
Our boys’ team, made up of boys from 4th, 5th & 6th Classes, had a trip to Beaufort in mid-March for the Mid-Kerry Mini 7s competition. Mixed fortunes in the group stages; a defeat by Scoil Mhuire and a win over Kilgobnet, saw us through to the Quarter-Final, where we bowed out to eventual winners Nagle Rice. All the boys played brilliantly and really gave their all.
The following week, it was the turn of our girls to take to the field in the Mid-Kerry Mini 7s competition. Again, we had mixed fortunes in our group but turned around an opening defeat to Kilgobnet N.S. with two great victories over Castledrum N.S. and Glenbeigh N.S. to progress to the semi-finals where we were defeated by eventual winners Nagle Rice. All our girls played some fantastic football and are a credit to their clubs.
Our thanks to Kevin and Mary Jo for organising two great days. Thanks also to our referees, Mike, Gerry and Nora, and to Beaufort GAA for the use of their facilities.

Active Breaks Challenge
As part of our Active School Flag journey, we took part in the Active Break Challenge from November 18th to December 13th. This initiative, supported by the Irish Heart Foundation, provided online resources for teachers to implement 3–5 minute movement breaks during the day.
The challenge was a great success, with teachers reporting noticeable benefits such as improved concentration, attention, memory, and overall classroom focus. It reinforced the value of regular physical activity in supporting both learning and well-being.

Playground Leaders
Our Active School Committee played a key role in promoting physical activity and helping to organise our Active School Flag initiatives throughout the year.
The committee met regularly each month to plan activities, share ideas, and keep the momentum going. They took responsibility for informing each class about upcoming activities and challenges, ensuring that everyone in the school community stayed engaged and excited about staying active.
One of their key initiatives was the creation of a playground roster, where committee members acted as Playground Leaders. They designed and implemented a range of playground games suitable for Infant classes and visited the Junior and Senior Infant playground during lunchtimes to lead fun, inclusive games.
These leadership roles gave pupils a sense of responsibility and pride, and helped build a positive, active, and caring atmosphere on the yard — especially for our youngest learners.
